Mind & Body: A Psychobiological Approach to Coaching
Saturday January 11, 2025 11:15am - 12:15pm EST
In a psychobiological world, physiological factors like muscle fatigue are real and important, but mechanical failure and pain are not the limiting factors. Instead athletes’ performance is determined by the balance between motivation and perceived exertion, and many factors influence how exertion is perceived. In this updated presentation we will look at this relatively new field of sports science, and discuss its practical implications for how to coach crews to go faster.

Reviewing and Understanding Video
Saturday January 11, 2025 4:30pm - 5:30pm EST
Mike Purcer has been coaching for fifty years and is a Certified Master Coach Developer by the Coaching Association of Canada. His company, Purcerverance (https://purcerverance.ca/), focuses on coach and athlete development. Mike has been analyzing videos of crews at the World Championships since 2016 and works with many clubs and schools to identify opportunities for crew speed. Mike is working on his third book, Technique, in his Notes on Rowing series, which includes Training (2009) and the 6th edition of Rigging, published this past summer.

Analyzing Video. What should coaches look for in their video review? Mike will discuss the difference between technique movements that correlate with boat speed and those that may only enhance aesthetics to make the crew look pretty. This session will review data extracted from Mike's video analysis of crews at the 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2022 and 2023 World Championships. Learn how to identify and explain technique factors that convince and motivate athletes to make technical changes.
