Ethan Curren is currently the Associate Head Coach of Women’s Rowing at Hobart & William Smith Colleges.
Coach Curren joined the HWS athletics staff full time as an Assistant Coach for the Hobart rowing team ahead of the 2018-19 season, after several years as a consultant. He has served as the Associate Head Coach of both the Men’s and Women’s rowing teams. In 2018-19, and 2020-21 Curren helped lead Hobart to is 14th and 15th consecutive Liberty League Championship and the NIRC Championships in 2019.
Curren came to HWS after spending the previous three years as the Director of Rowing and Head Coach at Genesee Waterways Center. During that time period, he also served as an consulting coach at Mercy High School and the Director of Rowing and Girls Head Coach at Pittsford crew where his crews won two State Championships.
Prior to coming to New York, Curren served as Head Coach at Community Rowing Inc. in Boston. Coach Curren started at CRI in 1991, and built the program to one of the most successful junior programs in the country. At the Head of the Charles, Coach Curren's teams finished first seven times, and claimed 11 medals. At the USRowing Club Nationals, his charges have won more than 100 medals. His team won the overall point championship in 2011 and the women's points championship four times at the USRowing Club Nationals. He has also overseen 18 gold medal winning boats at the Canadian Henley. He was the Head Men's rowing coach at Brandeis University in 1995 and an assistant coach at Buckingham Browne & Nichols School.
Coach Curren has been a coach in various capacities for USRowing since 1997. He was the head coach of the Junior Women’s development Camp from 2016-2018, after which he became the Director of Curriculum and Instruction for the Olympic Development Program. Prior to that he was a coach of the Junior B Sculling Development Camp, the Head Coach for the United States CanAmMex team and the junior women's sweep coach for the USA. At the CanAmMex Championships his boats won 14 medals (6 gold, 6 silver, 2 bronze). Additionally Coach Curren has served at various times on the USRowing Youth Advisory Committee, the Junior Committee, and the Education Committee.
For over twenty years Coach Curren has been a sought after speaker at conferences. He has presented at the USRowing Convention, the Joy of Sculling Conference, The What Works Conference, The Saratoga Juniors Conference and others. He also served as the Director of Coaching Education at CRI and helped start the Institute For Rowing Leadership.
